Do You Really Know Your Clients?

Recently on one of my trips to get groceries I decided to go incognito, (or so I thought) I was decked out - hat, sunshades and of course, my mask. To be honest, I had no real reason for operating like I was on a stake out, it was just a vibe.

So, there I was minding my own business when I was jolted by a loud “hey, K what’s up?” My sunnies concealed my surprise. It was an old acquaintance that I had not seen in, maybe 6 months. We exchanged pleasantries, kept it brief and carried on with our individual shopping duties.

I paid my tab with the last bit of cash I had in my purse and if you’re like me, you never want to leave yourself without some cash even though you plan to head straight home... so as I headed to the ABM (ATM) I heard, “Ms T how you a pass me suh?” It was a former student.......of my mother’s!

Looking back I laugh at my silliness to have thought that it would take a mere hat, shades and mask to become unidentifiable by someone that actually knows you. .

Why did I tell you that seemingly irrelevant story? Well, let’s apply it to the Client-Business relationship: The times we are living in now have caused our clients to change their spending behavior. New or potential clients have taken on new profiles: those that preferred to shop in person have now gravitated toward online shopping platforms; their budgets may have also changed, among other differences.

How do you you respond as a business owner? Do you throw in the towel, concluding that your business life is over and will then roll over and physically die? Of course not! The smart businessman or woman will also adjust with the times. The pundits call it “pivoting”. Go after your clients wherever they have turned; change your own modus operandi, set up shop online if that’s what it takes to stay relevant in your clients’ minds and to attract new clients to your business. Underneath their masks and behind their gadget screens, they are the same clients you have been building a relationship with.

The proverbial pie is definitely big enough for all of us to have a considerable slice. Just ensure that who’s sharing wants to keep dishing out that sweet goodness on your plate.

There’s a reason you started your business in the first place. Don’t let some fly-by-night virus let you give up on what you’ve been dreaming about for so long.

Feel free to leave a comment about how you have pivoted or plan to pivot your business. I may also be contacted at 876-864-4713, tovocommja@gmail.com.
